How to Practice Humility

This blog post is a supplement to today’s podcast A Religious Mindset vs. a Redeemed Mindset: a look at Humility.

Today is our fourth podcast in our fall series titled Thriving in God’s Abundance. Come join me in The Living Room as we discuss the differences between a religious spirit and a redeemed spirit. In order to thrive in God’s Abundance it’s essential to be rooted in humility. Did you know you can develop your humility by practicing it? Let’s look at some ways today God reveals in His Word how we as His followers can grow in humility.

Practicing Humility:

  1. Fear the Lord.

“The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.” Proverbs 22:4 (ESV)

“Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7 (ESV)

  1. Look for opportunities to serve others.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25: 35,40.

  1. Show honor to elders.

“Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the rpoud but gives grace to the humble.” I Peter 5:5 (ESV)

  1. Utilize your gifts to serve others and the Lord.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” I Peter 4:10 (ESV)

  1. Practice forgiveness

“Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” Colossians 3:13 (ESV)

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)

  1. Pray for those who have hurt you.

“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” Matthew 5:44 (ESV)

  1. Live a repentant life.

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14 (ESV)

  1. Drop pretention and be accountable to someone else.

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed.” James 5:16 (ESV)

  1. Begin seeing and treating everyone through a kingdom perspective not an earthly one.

“My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted y the law as transgressors.” James 2:1, 9 (ESV)

  1. Be thankful in all things.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV)

  1. Praise and worship the Lord.

“Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!” Psalms 115:1 (ESV)

“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.” Psalms 34:1-3 (ESV)

  1. Put others before yourself.

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3 (ESV)
