Ideas for Creating a Memorable Independence Day

While the summer blows past with each afternoon storm, I can’t believe July 4th is already upon us. While many this month have their special traditions for celebrating our country’s independence; in case you haven’t started one, here’s a list of ideas you can try to make your Independence Day memorable for your family and friends.

The Month of July’s Memory Makers:

  1. Cookout Block party: This is a great way to get to know your neighbors and it’s fun for the kids if you plan some games such as water balloon fights or have a cool pool nearby.
  2. Pack up the car with a cooler full of food and your tubes or floats and go to the nearest river, spring, lake, or ocean.
  3. Rent a water slide for the backyard. Kids and adults alike love a good water slide.
  4. Binge watch a patriotic movie like John Adams miniseries, The Patriot, or National Treasure (not sure this counts, but fun)
  5. Fill the pool with red, white, and blue glow beach balls, string up a net and have a volleyball game.
  6. Rent a boat for a day.
  7. Attend a concert. This time of year there’s plenty of outdoor concerts.
  8. Head to the hills. Drive to the mountains and spend the day hiking.
  9. Ride bikes on a bike trail.
  10. Tour a historical landmark or city like Williamsburg.
  11. Enjoy a freedom day brunch. Have everyone write their favorite freedom on a piece of paper, place in a jar, and guess which freedom came from which family member.
  12. Have a family worship time focused on the freedom of Christ.
  13. Attend a July 4th parade. There are boat parades, bike parades, and float parades. Find one and cheer.
  14. Ride a train somewhere. This could be a unique experience for your kids.
  15. Visit a farm with a petting zoo or a pick it yourself berry patch.
  16. Create an American flag with paint, popsicle sticks, or fabric. Get creative!
  17. Challenge your children to notice and identify nature. Start by listening to the birds in the morning and attempt to identify which type of bird they hear. The same for bugs and butterflies in the afternoon and notice their role in nature. Get out the telescope and star gaze at night. This is a wonderful opportunity to point out the creativity of God.
  18. Have the neighborhood kids decorate their bikes for freedom and ride around the neighborhood.
  19. Churn your own ice cream, and create a toppings bar.
  20. Have the kids host a bake sale in the neighborhood for a charity.

We hope this helps you create a special freedom day for your family and friends. From our house to yours, have a happy 4th of July!

We’ll see you after the fireworks.
